Specialization Course in Eating Disorders: Anorexia, Bulimia, and Binge Eating Disorder

An essential course for physicians, nutritionists, psychologists, pediatricians, psychiatrists, mental health professionals and other health professionals
.
Eating disorders (EDs) are probably the least understood problems in the entire health care system, even among those who treat them. The Specialization Course in ED aims to provide the student with a comprehensive understanding of ED, while providing a solid foundation for practical nutritional and psychological management. Both the classes and the syllabus are 100% clinically oriented (clinical reasoning applied to practice).

It is not possible to understand EDs through DSM criteria, nor through the classifications and definitions of the disorders, nor with common texts. To truly understand an ED involves the practitioner understanding what people experience: why they act as they do, where avoidance, obsessions, phobias, rituals and perseverative behaviors arise from, the reasons behind the difficulty in changing behavior, the neurocognitive processes that generate such patterns, etc. The deep understanding of these conditions is also key to strengthen the therapeutic relationship, often fragile, showing greater security and improving the bond, trust and mutual understanding between therapist and patient.

The Specialization Course in Eating Disorders fills a gap in the training of physicians, psychologists and nutritionists. The program is also recommended for mental health professionals and those dedicated to ED, as it goes beyond the classical view of ED and cognitive-behavioral treatment. The course provides the student with a broad scientific basis at the level of neuroscience applied to the clinic, in addition to a good practical nutritional and psychological understanding. With the recognition of training in ICNS, and the opportunity to obtain a highly recognized and valued qualification in the clinic.

  • The course follows the same methodology as the courses with live classes.
  • The classes last 3-4h and open every 2 weeks.
  • For each class there is a test exam, with one month to complete it.
  • The course is developed through the virtual classroom, visualizing the classes and reading the book.
  • The student can raise any questions in the forum that is open for it.

Learning Objectives

  • The syllabus is approached in depth and provides a solid foundation, regardless of profession. The syllabus is designed to be of general use to physicians, psychologists, nutritionists, etc.

  • Understand what an ACT is in a deep, scientific and clinical way.

  • Understand the clinical goal and patient orientation in a holistic way.

  • Understand the key aspects of dietetic work
  • .
  • To understand the key aspects of psychological work
  • .
  • To understand the problematic of descriptive mental health diagnoses.

  • To banish inappropriate views of ED as a "dietary problem", as a "cultural problem of thinness", as a "self-esteem problem", etc.
  • .
  • To offer specific training, but covering a comprehensive understanding of ED.

  • It is oriented to anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder.

Student's profile

Course recommended mainly for nutritionists, physicians, pediatricians and psychologists. The syllabus is transdisciplinary, oriented to give a solid base to all people working with ED. No specific prior knowledge of ED is required.

The course is at a high level for psychiatrists and mental health professionals. It is also recommended as training and refresher for workers in ACT clinics and mental health professionals who wish to broaden their neuroscientific knowledge and clinical reasoning.

Clinics and centers that want to form groups, can ask us for an individualized price.

Access requirements

The course is open to anyone who needs it. People without university health training should be aware that some topics are complex and the language can be complex. The syllabus requires dedication and therefore the person must be determined to attend the classes and then study in depth.

Some of our students are family members of people with ADD, and people who have suffered an ADD. This course is not recommended for people who are going through a vulnerable time, and should not be used as a substitute for appropriate therapeutic care that a person may need.

Online Format

This program is offered in an asynchronous online format, which means that classes do not have a fixed schedule. However, the methodology of ICNS's asynchronous online programs is designed to be followed in a structured and continuous manner. One class is released every two weeks, and there are deadlines for completing the assessments, requiring students to study consistently over time. Students have full access to the virtual classroom at all times, where they can also contact professors directly. ICNS's asynchronous online training is therefore delivered in a continuous format, which - based on our experience - leads to better learning outcomes and overall engagement compared to other approaches.

  • The asynchronous online program follows a continuous learning methodology.
  • All training is carried out through the virtual classroom, combining video lectures with reading the coursebook.
  • Each class lasts 3-4 hours, and a new topic with its corresponding classes is released every two weeks.
  • Each class includes a multiple-choice test, which must generally be completed within 30 days of the release of that topic.
  • Students can ask the professors any questions through the virtual platform. A dedicated discussion thread is opened for each class topic.

Student reviews

This course is not only excellent; it fills a very important gap in a condition that many health professionals encounter and that we must understand well before being able to help our patients.
From the most general to the most practical, all the necessary points are covered to have a comprehensive view of eating disorders.
You will learn to think and develop your clinical eye, applying many things from the very first class. Also, the book is very complete, an ideal complement to the classes, which I’m sure will give me even more tools with each reading.
A must-have if you want to work with people who suffer from any eating disorder or if you are simply a nutritionist who wants to deeply understand many of the behaviors you encounter in consultations.
An exciting and enriching journey.
Ana Núñez Veiga, Dietitian-Nutritionist
After setting the bar high with the Master’s in Neurosciences, taking this course has been one of my best learning experiences. A completely necessary vision and approach to what anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder are, beyond the “eating and body disorder” label and the simplistic view that unfortunately prevails. It should be a mandatory subject for anyone intending to treat any type of eating disorder.
Ariadna de Luna, Family Doctor
A very interesting and well-organized course. It doesn’t feel like the first edition. What I value most is the change in perspective about eating disorders that happens from the first class, the information Alfonso has given us to understand what they are, how a person with an eating disorder might think and feel, and how complex it can be. It helped me dive deeper into the topic, its causes, and its repercussions. In addition, several practical tools were provided to help address these problems and possible solutions. Highly recommended.
Paloma Malagón , Doctor (plastic surgeon)
Choosing ICNS as my online training center, to expand my knowledge and stay professionally up to date, has been one of the best decisions I have made.

I have taken several trainings with them, and compared to others, I can say that every cent and every second invested has been completely worth it.

Among their trainings, one of the most cutting-edge, at least from my experience, is the specialization in EDs.

Currently, there is nothing on the training market (at least to my knowledge) as up to date, with as much evidence and patient applicability as what you learn in this course.

A completely different concept from what I had previously encountered, in the way of seeing, understanding, and interpreting, and most importantly, it teaches you to think and develop clinical judgment.
Tato Fresno, Dietitian and Higher Technician in Physical Activity and Sports Animation
If you are interested in or passionate about the world of psychology and nutrition, this course on Eating Disorders is highly recommended. You will truly learn what lies behind these disorders, as very few things you may have heard in other trainings or from outside sources are actually real or even useful. You will gain knowledge and resources about what they involve and how to help the person. I expected nothing less from ICNS—very happy with this experience.
Christian Barcenilla , Dietitian
I really enjoyed the course! The content is very well organized, and the classes and materials are very complete and clearly explained.
I am very grateful for the tools provided, as they have helped me grow significantly as a professional.
Pía González Jara, Nutritionist
Excellent course, Alfonso knows how to convey the knowledge of the subject in a unique way, making learning easy. I loved it, and he also helped me see the reality of the subject. He presented the complexity in such a way that my previous misconceptions about EDs have been erased; now I see them from a different perspective.
Excellent professor, truly outstanding. I thank him for his teachings.
My experience with you has been great; congratulations to all the professors, as you are the best. Thank you all.
Trinidad Sanchez Martín, Degree and PhD in Pharmacy and Diploma in Nutrition
I found this course very interesting. I like that there is scientific evidence and that the information can be cross-checked. The professors' level is incredible, and they have been very approachable, which I find important.
It's the first course I've taken with ICNS, but I recommend it 100% and will surely take another.
Carmen Gloria Aldana Jiménez , Advanced Technician in Dietetics
It has been a truly enriching experience. A 360-degree vision of the basic (and not so basic) notions of Eating Disorders (ED). It opens your eyes to new ways of studying this topic and motivates you to want to learn more.

Honestly, highly recommended.

Thank you so much for this experience. I hope more people are lucky enough to find you and take courses with you, because only then will a change in mindset be achieved for a comprehensive understanding of ED.
Silvia, Cook. Dietitian.
The course provides a good foundation on ED and a critical perspective. Both the book and the classes are quite useful. It is an intensive course, so it is only suitable for people who don't mind spending four hours in front of the computer, in this case on Saturdays.

I would recommend it 100%.
Nagore , Psychologist and Dietitian
I really enjoyed the course, as you learn about eating disorders from different perspectives such as psychology, nutrition... which gives you a global vision, something very important to help and understand people with these types of disorders. In addition, it shows the reality and not the inaccurate information circulating on social media.
Ane Martínez Rico, Human Nutrition and Dietetics
At first, for me as a professional in Eating Disorders (ED) who will start practicing next week (even if it's just as an intern, but in the future I'll work independently in this field), it was necessary to learn something about such an "unknown" topic. In fact, what I believed (wrongly) an ED was, compared to what Alfonso presented in the course, there is an ocean of difference. For that reason, I think the course was necessary for me to become the good nutritionist I intend to be.
Due to time constraints, I have not been able to review the book as thoroughly as I would like; I have only studied thoroughly what was covered in class, and I have been overwhelmed by all the concepts, research, and discoveries I have gained throughout the course. Even though I still have a lot to study/research/experience, these "pills" were exactly what I needed at the right time. Nothing to add, I take the course as it is. It more than fulfills its purpose.
Both I and my future potential patients are very grateful for what was provided.
Best regards!
Mario Sanchez Cancela, Human Nutrition and Dietetics
This course has been of great value and usefulness to me; it marked a before and after in my knowledge about eating disorders (EDs). I am a nutritionist, and in school or in practice it's not easy to find tools or quality training on these topics, which makes mastering them complex and generally leads us to manage them incorrectly, even with the best intentions. As society has portrayed these disorders - as something fashionable or simply related to body image - advice is often given about healthy eating, self-esteem, and other things. The course made it clear to me, from origin to treatment, in a simple and clear way. This topic is not easy; while much more depth is needed, I now feel more confident in treating an ED patient, understanding what is really happening and what my contribution is from my role. Thanks for this training, to Professor Bordallo for his passion in teaching, his preparation, his experience, and his concern for ensuring the patient receives quality care.Without a doubt, I would take another training with the Institute.
Samiah, Nutritionist
It is a course that offers a comprehensive view of what Eating Disorders are, providing answers about their possible causes and debunking concepts and beliefs surrounding them, offering clear and applicable treatment guidelines.
Isabel Albadán Tovar , Nutritionist-Dietitian
I loved the course as a first deep dive into the complexity of EDs. I saw how I gradually built a knowledge base that helped me apply it in consultations and feel more confident when intervening. Without a doubt, a very solid foundation to learn and work with EDs.In addition, I found the methodology totally flexible and comfortable, and Alfonso is a very good professor who generates debate, critical thinking, and reflection, in addition to having the knowledge. In conclusion: engaging, complex, and very useful!
Juan, Health Psychologist in private practice
For me, both this course and Alfonso are something everyone should have in their life.
It’s something that can’t be described in words, something magnificent.
Everything I’ve learned is not only useful for applying to EDs but to ALL aspects of life.
Indescribable.
Maria del Pilar Fernández Terrón, Dietitian
This course has given me the fundamental foundations to understand EDs and to have a clear “mental map” in my head about the key points to consider when addressing them. I believe the course is an essential starting point for any professional who works with people with EDs. I also see it as very necessary for health professionals who, even if they do not treat EDs directly, need to know what they are in order to detect them and refer when necessary.
The information we find on the internet, in books, on social media, etc., is far from what EDs really are, but Alfonso quickly gets you up to speed and clears away the nonsense from your head… although it’s hard to get rid of the erroneous beliefs we’ve been inundated with for years.
In short, a course that for me marked a before and after in my knowledge of EDs. Thank you, Alfonso, for enlightening us as always!
Marta Sánchez de la Viña, Dietitian
I am infinitely grateful for how well-structured the course is.
I am a psychologist in an eating disorder association, and I feel much more confident when working with them — more tools, more order when setting goals, more awareness, more clarity in addressing causes, etc.
Extremely valuable information that fully guides the professional’s path regarding one of the most complex psychological disorders I’ve seen in practice.
Natalia López Alcaide, Degree in Psychology
It’s a very complete course, full of interesting information and with excellent teaching staff. For me, as a psychologist, it has greatly helped me manage certain patients with EDs. The exams every two weeks help you keep up with the syllabus and push you to stay on track.
All I can say is thank you very much!
Alberto Berruezo, Psychologist
First of all, I thought it was a 10/10 course, as it gives us a very realistic view of EDs today and, above all, debunks all the myths about them. On the other hand, I want to thank and highlight Alfonso’s great contribution as a teacher, as he is very clear about what he says, speaks openly about everything, and gives a very realistic view. A perfect 10.
Sara, Studies in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences and Dietitian
I am very happy with the course.
On one hand, the content provided has been of great importance and I believe it is very useful when addressing ED cases.
It is approached from a different perspective than usual, and I believe that at ICNS it is addressed in a very correct way, focusing on and referring to what an ED truly is.
On the other hand, I liked how the course is organized and the methodology implemented, as well as the resources provided.
I will definitely take another course with you.
Mireia, Early Childhood Education Teacher and Dietitian
This specialization course has been a great tool for me to expand my knowledge, applying it daily with my patients.
It has opened new doors for my ED patient consultations, broadening my vision of their current condition and nutritional management. Honestly, it wasn’t a topic I was passionate about, but during the course it became very important in my work, as I found methodologies that facilitate patient recovery.
One month ago, I applied my new knowledge with a 17-year-old anorexic patient, and results over the last month show her change in behavior toward food — she is now able to eat in public and has faced high-calorie foods, feeling satisfied with the results.
Truly, many thanks!!
Thank you very much.
Kelly Lobo, Nutritionist-Dietitian
I came to this course thanks to Maria Fraile, who was my nutritionist in the past and one of the people I have learned the most from and continue to learn from today.
I am a personal trainer and, although I have no prior studies in nutrition, I wanted to dive fully into this training which has done nothing but provide me with knowledge and reality. I’m loving it on a huge level! Awesome.
As for the teachers, I can only add that they are amazing.
N.V , Personal Trainer
